Truman Project Statement on Transgender Individuals in the U.S. Military

Washington, DC – Today, Truman National Security Project Communications Director Graham West issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s remarks against transgender individuals serving in the U.S. military:

“It should be self-evident that in the all-volunteer force of the United States of America, those who meet the qualifications should be able to serve—including transgender individuals.”

“The strength of the U.S. military is dependent on choosing the best of the best from the widest pool of applicants from all walks of life. What's more, this was—by the administration's own admission—an entirely political choice made with no regard to operational capabilities or human dignity.”

“Because this policy change was announced in a series of tweets, there is no indication of how it will affect the transgender individuals currently serving in our armed forces, or those who work as civilians throughout the defense, intelligence, and diplomatic structures of our government. In any case, it is up to our public officials to stand against this transparently bigoted policy.”
