Truman’s Statement on the DOJ’s Attempt to Drop Charges Against Michael Flynn

WASHINGTON, DC - The Department of Justice’s attempt to dismiss the charges against Michael Flynn represents the latest act by Attorney General William Barr in a long line of efforts to decimate the separation of powers enshrined in the Constitution. These efforts place President Trump’s personal interests over the safety and security of our nation and demonstrate a total disregard for the rule of law. Michael Flynn admitted twice to lying to the FBI about communications he had with then Russian Ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak discussing the lifting of sanctions on Russia for meddling in America’s 2016 election. Flynn’s defiance of U.S. law enforcement about close ties to our nation’s adversaries and subversive actions to skirt the law are blatant threats to national security. But in a robust democracy, we have checks and balances to ensure actors within one branch of the government cannot punish adversaries and cover up wrongdoing to advance personal goals. It is now more critical than ever that checks are applied and that U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan reject the DOJ’s request and reinstate the case against Michael Flynn, who should be tried to the fullest extent of U.S. law.
