Truman Project Statement on Appointment of Stephen Bannon as White House Advisor

Washington, DC – Truman National Security Project President and CEO Michael Breen issued the following statement in response to Stephen Bannon being named chief strategist and senior counselor in President-Elect Donald Trump’s White House:

“Stephen Bannon, the former Executive Chairman of Breitbart News Network, has an undeniable track record of giving license and coverage to xenophobia, misogyny, anti-Semitism, and racist white nationalism that is fundamentally incompatible with service in the White House. Pluralism is a fundamental strategic and moral strength of our great nation; to have someone who is not just indifferent but apparently hostile to that fact so close to the president is dangerous and unacceptable."

"Presidential appointments matter because they send a signal to the world about what matters to us as a state and a people. Mr. Bannon's elevation undermines American leadership in the world, and the moral authority upon which that leadership depends. We urge other organizations to recognize the threat Mr. Bannon’s worldview presents to American values and implore President-Elect Trump to remove Mr. Bannon from his prospective staff.”
