Truman Project Statement on New Revelations Regarding DHS Secretary Nielsen and Family Separations by the Trump Administration

Washington, DC — Upon the release of a signed and approved Department of Homeland Security (DHS) memo addressed to DHS Secretary Nielsen that recomended “prosecution of all amenable adults who cross our border illegally, including those presenting with a family unit,” Truman Project Interim Executive Director Bishop Garrison issued the following statement:

“This memo’s release further corroborates the clear conclusion that Secretary Nielsen lied when she insisted that the Trump Administration did not have a policy of family separation at a press conference on 18 June. This cruel policy has subsequently resulted in families torn apart at the border, mental and physical trauma to children detained by our government, and many children still without their parents—some permanently—months after the practice’s supposed end.”

“Because the effectiveness of the head of DHS depends upon credibility with the public in times of crisis and on account of her complicity in this national disgrace, we renew our call for Secretary Nielsen to resign immediately.”
