Truman Project Statement on President Trump’s Reversal on Declassifying Russia Documents

Washington, DC – Today, after President Trump announced that he will not declassify documents related to the Russia investigation, Truman interim Executive Director Bishop Garrison issued the following statement:

"President Trump’s original order for the Justice Department to declassify significant documents related to the Russia investigation was a clear abuse of power; selectively declassifying documents to score political points is always unwise. His reversal now fails to both protect the integrity of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation and ensure that Mueller will not face further politicized machinations from the White House. The fact that the president would even consider, let alone go so far as to order, the declassification of sensitive materials gathered by the U.S. intelligence community demonstrates his harmful ignorance towards matters of intelligence, law enforcement, and national security."

"Given President Trump’s clear hostility towards and willingness to compromise the Russia investigation, leaders of principle on both sides of the aisle must demand that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell immediately bring the bipartisan legislation aimed at protecting the special counsel from a politically motivated firing by the president to the floor for a vote. The investigation must run its course, and those who committed wrongdoing must be held accountable."
