Support for robust democracy at home and abroad has been at the heart of Truman’s mission and values from the beginning. Our Democracy & Human Rights Initiative engages the Truman community to bridge the time-sensitive gap between U.S. national security policymakers and civil society and emerging political voices in the Middle East and North Africa.

On August 22, a group of 20 Truman Fellows and Partners gathered for a discussion on Islam and democracy in transitioning countries with Truman Senior Fellow Tamara Wittes, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and now Director of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at Brookings. Such conversations are invaluable to Truman community members gearing up for missions to the region or policy battles in the halls of government.
