Today, Truman joins the nation in celebrating the release and return of three Americans held by Russia: Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, former U.S. Marine and Iraq War veteran Paul Whelan, and journalist Alsu Kurmasheva. The liberation of American prisoners from Russia is an incredible diplomatic achievement by the Biden-Harris Administration, particularly as the United States steadfastly supports Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. Seeing our fellow Americans, alongside other political prisoners, freed through the determined efforts of negotiators across seven nations, is a potent reminder about the power of diplomacy and the importance of allies and partners to American security.

In 2022, the Biden-Harris Administration arranged the release of former Marine Trevor Reed and WNBA star Brittney Griner wrongfully held in Russian captivity. Last night, she celebrated at the Olympic Games, where the world gathered in unity and advocated for the release of political prisoners everywhere.

Truman sends our heartfelt welcome home to the returnees and their families. As an organization whose founding principle is that diplomacy is critical to our nation’s security, we congratulate the Biden-Harris Administration for their ongoing commitment to the peace, safety, and security of Americans.
