A Mother's Reflection: Choosing Sides in a Complex World
As a member of TNSP, I believe we are an organization that promotes the sanctity and beauty of every human life –an organization which continually reflects, discusses, engages with “when is the sacrifice for human life acceptable?”
This is a question which we face daily in our communities, neighborhoods, country and world. A question that we adamantly answer from multiple angles and contingencies.
Shall this remain a question that has multiple answers?
Living through this moment nine years after my first encounter with Afghanistan as a military spouse, I have experienced a flood of thoughts, emotions and empathy like
The initial moments of this long, devastating crisis were surreal. The tumultuous 40 + year devastation was on full display for the nation and world.
As I drove around my North Texas community I was abruptly stopped by billboards, church signs and yard signs saying, “Stand with Israel”. Never did I see a sign “Stand with Palestine” or simply “Stand for Human Life”.
Days later my children returned from the playground saying, “Our friend is asking us today, if we stand with Palestine; he is wearing a “Stand with Palestine” t-shirt. My immediate response was, “Yes we stand with Palestine, Israel AND the right for freedom and life.”
I was sickened that our children are being pushed into a world that makes you choose one or the other versus both.
As a mother and Trumanite it is time for me to get real. Real with my inherited beliefs, my adopted beliefs, my truth, and my purpose.
